Part I

The death of the forest

I

Topical rain-forests (jungles) are found in South East Asia, Central Africa and South America. These jungles were hardly touched by human activity until the middle of this century, but now they are being destroyed by chemicals, cut down and burned, at the rate of 2 square kilometers a minute. In some places, destruction is almost complete - the worst-case being Brazil, where only 2% of its former rain-forests remain. Twenty years ago, no one would have believed that the rain forests could vanish.

II

Loss of forest means loss of cloud cover and of rain, which consequently causes a change of climate. Cutting down the jungle (deforestation) in Brazil has led to the expansion of the desert in nearby Peru. Similarly, this same process has led to the Sahara creeping southwards, and the resulting drought has caused the human suffering in Ethiopia, Mali and other African countries that has shocked the world.
